SLEMAN - Devoted to being an educator, both teacher and lecturer is a soul call for some people. One of them is a lecturer of Geological Engineering, Faculty of Mineral Technology UPN "Veteran" Yogyakarta, Dr. Ir. H. Jatmika Setiawan, MT. He has devoted himself to be a lecturer since 1993.
Jatmiko revealed, for him to be a professor is a happy profession.
"The figure that inspired me to be a lecturer is my grandfather grandparent. He gives direction that a lecturer is someone who can make others smart, "said Jatmiko when met after teaching on Wednesday (25/04/2018).
Another inspiring person, continued the man born in Yogyakarta, April 11, 1964, is Prof.Dr.Sukendar Asikin, a lecturer of Technology Institute Bandung, a tectonic expert who is his lecturer supervisor.
"I become a lecturer because I am happy. I can make the generation be smart. It is like Hadist of the Prophet that the best man in the sight of Allah is the man who is most beneficial to others, "said the expert lecturer in structural geology, tectonics, geotourism, geoheritage, geopark and sloop stability.
In the midst of his busy teaching, researching, and serving the community, Jatmiko can still pursue his interest in the arts. Jatmiko is very good at playing musical instrument that is saron and kendang.
Karawitan for the father of Purwaning Tyas Setiawati and M Nurjati Setiawan has already been in his blood. From his childhood, he and his brothers were taught to play the traditional art tool by grandfather and the parents who were artists.
"My grandparents and fathers are traditional Javanese artists. My father could grasp all Javanese musical instruments eloquently. He could also play puppets and become puppeteers. I like nembang. My ability is only 20 percent of his, "he said.
For Jatmiko, art especially karawitan is one way of expressing the heart in a smooth and amazing way.
"Karawitan is my way of preserving or nguri-uri the culture of ancestral lordship. This art is the muslims Javanese leaders heritage to preach religious teachings, "he said.
Jatmiko is practicing karawitan every Thursday night and macapat art (tembang or Javanese traditional poetry) every Friday night.
In addition of being skillful in playing musical instruments, Jatmiko also becomes the vocalist in karawitan. The song that he really likes is Dhadhanggula Sidoasih. This song tells about the loyalty of a husband and wife. Jatmiko said sometimes he sings the song at the wedding party as a advise and tip for the bride.
His passion of karawitan art leads him to be the answer of UKM Art Karawitan in UPNVY. He and the gamelan trainers teach students to play the art.
SME Arts Karawitan always be a viewer on every graduation ceremony and other great activities.
"I am happy to teach the students. Maybe it's my soul call to have young people like traditional art," he concluded. (wwj / humas)
