In the educational partnership, representative of PT. Bukit Makmur Mandiri Utama (PT. Buma), Mr. Indra Kanoena, the Director of Human Resources and General Affairs and Mr. Hasan Widjaya the General Manager of HR Strategy and Development were cordially welcome by the Deputy Rector commissioning Students Affairs and Cooperation, DR. Singgih Saptono, MT and Deans of FTM, Faculty of Agriculture, KA UPT Entrepreneurship and other prominent personage in the Court Room on the first floor. In his welcoming speech, Dr. Singgih Saptono, MT explained the history of the establishment of UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta and its change in status from an Official (Kedinasan) University, to a Private University and, finally, a state university. Apart from that Dr. Singgih Saptono MT also described the faculties existing at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta, in particular FTM (Faculty of Metallurgy Engineering) as one that corresponds to the support and synergy with PT. BUMA. In addition to being a state-defending university, UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta is also an energy university, holding its own strong position in geological sciences and it was also explained by him the new study programs being opened for admission, the Metallurgy Engineering, Geology and Information Technology, and a post-graduate (S3) study program in Geological Engineering.
Indra Kanoena expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome by UPN ”Veteran” Yogyakarta although PT. BUMA was represented by only two persons, He explained that UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta is very familiar to PT BUMA and Indra specifically addressed that people from Yogya, in particular those who are graduates from UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta are the toughest and most resilient professionals and that they have special values for PT. BUMA and they even have BUMA Family Associations in Yogya, Semarang and Solo.
He also explained that PT. BUMA and UPN have been engaged in cooperation for a long time but such cooperation has not been formally institutionalized in an MOU, as an example. Moreover, many alumni of UPN work in PT. BUMA and they hold important positions.
Hasan Widjaya also described the history of PT. BUMA, which was originally a family business established in 1994, has now become a professional company, with a target to reach “one billion dollar” revenue in 2018.
The Dean of Faculty of Mineral Engineering (FTM), Dr. Suharsono MT, presented in detail the conditions of the Faculty of Mineral Engineering at UPN, from its organization and working procedures to its motto, Education, Research and Services and the study programs in Faculty of Mineral Engineering (FTM), among others, is the Environment Engineering, which is different from any of its kind existing in other universities. The Environment Engineering study at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta is in tandem with Mining in ecological conservation.
The next session was the Discussion or Ask and Answer session. Starting this session, Dr. Eddy Nusanto, the Head of the Mining Engineering study program, inquired questions regarding what can be done by PT. BUMA with regard to lecturers’ orientation as the case with PT. Freeport and KPC (Kaltim Prima Coal. Can PT. BUMA provide the same opportunity as PT. Freeport and KPC do?
DR. Basuki Rachmad described the curriculum and asked whether the curriculum run at the Geological Engineering at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta is suitable with the on-site situations or in the event that students of UPNVY students practice-study at PT. BUMA, do they match the theory and the actual on-site practices?
Dr. Joko Susilo asked how many UPN alumni work at PT. BUMA and what percentage (how many more) can UPN alumni be added to the workforce of PT BUMA annually.
Dr. Purwanto, Deputy Dean of Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Economy and Business explained that mineral exploration is also studied in the Faculty of Economy, and asked if such study can be related to the business of PT. BUMA’s program so that students of the Faculty of Economy may be able to directly see the exploration activities?
The Head of UPT Career Development, Ir. Dyah Probowati MT, explained that PT. BUMA is one of the companies providing workshop sponsorship in the opening of the Metallurgy Engineering study program at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta.
PT BUMA, she further added, has always participated in Job Fairs, recruitment and training for students prior to their graduation inauguration.
In response to the inquiries presented by UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta, Mr. Indra Konena, the Director of Human Resources and General Affairs of PT BUMA, said that he would accommodate and follow up the inputs and suggestions in accordance with the company’s ability.
