Jakarta: The internalization of Indonesian values ??to the students, lecturers, and education personnel at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) Veteran Yogyakarta through the state defense education is the key to harmonious relations between academic activities. The values ??of defending the country continue to be preserved on the campuses of the heroes’ heritage.

 "The campus is inherited by the heroes, since it was founded by the heroes and formalized by President Soekarno, it indeed carries a special message. The campus is expected to be able to produce pioneers in the field of development, be imbued with a spirit of discipline, learn to build on the values ??of national defense," said the Chancellor of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) Veteran Yogyakarta Mohamad Irhas Effendi when contacted by Medcom.id, Jakarta, Wednesday, August 21, 2019.

Moreover, after returning to the status of State Universities (PTN) in 2014, it is strengthened by the issuance of Presidential Regulation number 121 of 2014 concerning the Establishment of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) Veteran Yogyakarta, in article 2 paragraph 2 which reads "The organization of education as referred to paragraph (1) has a state defense identity regulated in the statutes of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) Veteran Yogyakarta

 "In the Presidential Regulation (PP), UPN values included, perhaps as the only one, are attached to the rules in the presidential regulation so that we must implement it," he explained.

Irhas explained, the implementation had been carried out since the selection of student admissions by recruiting new students who have the character of understanding the field of state defense. "We prioritize it. For example, we see the value of citizenship, then the second is an initial achievement. We prioritize paskibraka, scouting", he explained.

Then, the new students will get state defense education in collaboration with the Air Force Academy (AAU). Irhas explained, gradually after completing the process at AAU, they will be sent to the Education and Training Center at the Ministry of Defense.

"Starting in their first year of college, they are in uniform, start the college, be prepared and pray. Then, we had a special course on defending the country in the college, namely Wimaya, besides that we also have courses supporting the state defense", he said.

 He explained that the additional course was in the specialization course. He gave an example, in the Mining Study Program, they learn how to prepare a mine that has the character of defending the country.

"For management study programs, for example, they learn how the financial management is based on the state defense," he said.

 Later on, the students will get a certificate when they have completed all state defense education activities. The certificate will later be used for the final exam.

 Even though they have received a certificate does not mean that they students are not tested anymore. They will be re-tested for their understanding of defending the country. "The oral examination guarantees that they not only get the value of the course, but we will also test their understanding in defending the country. This is an awareness process of understanding internalization and we detect changes in attitudes and behavior whether they have the value of defending the country or not," explained Irhas.

With the internalization of the country's defense values, the activities at UPN Veteran Yogyakarta, which consists of many groups of students, can be harmonious. "UPN is indeed varied from various groups, it is all we unite by giving the same understanding that we are in a country that has the same ideology, we must uphold the Republic of Indonesia," he said.
