YOGYA, KRJOGJA.com - Agriculture experts are asking the community to farm to address the Corona pandemic which is likely to last for a long time with various consequences. The communities can use simple technology to plant in urban locations that don't have land.
Dr Partoyo, the Former Dean of Agriculture the Faculty of UPN Veteran Yogyakarta as well as the Chairman of LP3M revealed that the community members currently do indeed need to strengthen household-level food security with various steps. In the city of Yogyakarta, for example, the existence of a vegetable village or a vegetable alley must be optimized again to meet the needs of residents.
"Optimizing urban agriculture with simple technology is very possible, such as growing vegetables in pots, paint cans, plastic refills from cooking oil, and so on. In Jogja, a vegetable village or vegetable alley has been developed, in which for the time of this pandemic can be focused on the scale of each house", he said when being contacted by KRjogja.com, Friday (4/24/2020).
Partoyo told the people who still have vacant land that he could cultivate alternative carbohydrate foods such as tubers. "Maybe people in the suburbs or those who still have vacant land can plant cassava as a source of alternative carbohydrates than rice", he continued.
Meanwhile, Ir. Wafit Dinarto, an agriculture expert from Mercu Buana University, Yogyakarta (UMBY), assesses that it is time for the community to use the available land for farming. Some plants can be choices such as fruit, vegetables and tubers.
"I think it must be done immediately because we do not know when this pandemic ends. Actually, we have resources in each home", he told KRjogja.com.
Resources from the house, according to Wafit, can be utilized including household organic waste which can function as organic fertilizer. "We can also take advantage of containers such as pots, tin cans, polybags or we can also use a model of verticulture", he continued. (Fxh)
