SLEMAN - The presence of Metallurgical Engineering Study Program OF UPN Veteran Yogyakarta responds to the Government Regulation Number 4 of 2009 concerning Mineral and Coal Mining.

The law requires that all mining materials be processed and refined first in the country to increase their added value before being exported abroad. The law also requires that metal mining establish a metal processing or extraction plant from rock ore.

Therefore, it certainly requires a lot of human resources. To respond to this, UPN Veterans Yogyakarta has established a Metallurgical Engineering Study Program which has entered its 3rd year this year.

The Dean of Mineral Technology (FTM) Faculty of UPN Veteran Yogyakarta, Sutarto, revealed that many smelters have also been built that they require a lot of Metallurgical Engineering graduates.

"Metallurgical Engineering will be very prospective in the future; I notice that the admission interest to  Metallurgical Engineering is big enough," he said, Wednesday (07/29/2020).

Sutarto revealed that the status of UPN Veteran Yogyakarta, which changed from a private foundation to a PTN (public university) under the Ministry of Education and Culture, increasingly has made high school graduates interested in studying in UPN Veterans Yogyakarta.

"There are two factors, first (UPN) to become PTN; second, metallurgy is a new study program that has not been many in Indonesia and government policies require mining companies to establish or build metallurgical smelters," he said.

Currently, the accreditation of Metallurgical Engineering Study Program at UPN Veteran Yogyakarta is in the assessment stage.

Accreditation forms have been included since last year and an online visitation assessment is currently underway.

"Yet, at least it has been accredited; when we submitted the accreditation forms, it has been accredited. After the visitation gives the result, the field assessment will be done until tomorrow," he said.

Even though the Metallurgical Study Program has not yet graduated any graduates because this year is the third year for the presence of Metallurgical Engineering Study Program, the prospect of Metallurgy Engineering graduates was considered good, he said.

Moreover, there is a government policy that requires mining companies to build smelters.

"Some smelters are ready; some are being built. It means that, in God’s willing, after graduating, a lot of graduates are needed in the world of work. That's one of the reasons we founded Metallurgical Engineering," he said.

Every year, Metallurgical Engineering Study Program of UPN Veteran Yogyakarta accepts 60 students divided into two classes. It is hoped that the graduates of Metallurgical Engineering at UPN Veteran Yogyakarta will quickly be absorbed in the workforce.

Metallurgical Engineering, which is under the Department of Mining Engineering, UPN Veteran, Yogyakarta, has collaborated many mining activities involving FTM with many mining companies in Indonesia.

"Though there is only a few numbers of companies that have started involving Metallurgical Engineering Study Program now, we established this study program not just having students to study here, but we founded this study program because we want all graduates can be absorbed by the world of work," he explained.
