SLEMAN- Five students from the Faculty of Mineral Technology of UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta (UPNVY) won the 2nd and 3rd place at the Geophysics Whiz Event and Seminar (GWES) organized by the Bhuwana Geophysical Engineering Student Association (Hima TG Bhuwana) University of Lampung. They are the Sif, Rodeo, and Tierra teams, each of which competed in a number of categories via teleconference.
The Sif team consisting of Okta Dwi Puspita, Reinaldi Juniarto, and Sava Sintya Larasati won the Second Place in the Poster Competition category. Meanwhile, the Rodeo team consisting of Putri Pertiwi and Tito Waluyo Jiwandono participated in the Paper Competition category and won the 3rd place.
"The title of the poster that we participated in the championship was Geological, Gravity and Magnetotelluric Straightness Data Analysis for the Identification of Field Geothermal Systems, South Sumatra. This poster explains the results of research on the subsurface conditions of the earth as an area that has the potential for geothermal energy (geothermal)," explained Okta Dwi Puspita, the head of the Sif team.
Okta continued explaining that her team's research was to determine the potential of geothermal energy using geological straightness data and geophysical data using gravity and magnetotelluric methods.
"We took the location in South Sumatra because of a natural phenomenon as a characteristic of geothermal energy, namely the existence of several hot springs, “ she continued.
On the same occasion Putri Pertiwi, the leader of the Rodeo team explained the title of the paper they were contesting was "Analysis of Induced Resistivity and Polarization Data to Detect the Presence and Mineralization of the Karangsambung Area, Kebumen, Central Java".
"This title departs from the sub-theme of Mining Alternative Exploration, where gold is a precious metal as an investment tool that avoids inflation and its price tends to continue to increase, so the researchers conducted a research targeting gold mineralization in the Karangsambung area, Kebumen, Central Java." Princess said.
The Karangsambung research area was chosen because it is famous for its mélange lok ulo complex (the accretionary prism complex between the Eurasian and Indo-Australian continental plates in the Cretaceous era which traversed northeast-southwest) as well as its volcanic and tectonic activity which resulted in igneous intrusion with columnar joint structures.
"We chose one of the geophysical methods to determine the response to the presence of mineralization, namely by using the resistivity and induced polarization methods," she said.
GWES 2020 with the theme "Challenges in Optimizing Exploration for Energy Storage in a Large Scale for Sustainable Energy in Indonesia" was held from 18-20 September 2020 online via Zoom. GWES 2020 is a series of national level competition events consisting of the category survey design competition, photo contest, poster competition, earth Olympiad, paper competition, and opened with a national seminar with the theme "IoT and Big Data Challenges in Applies Geophysics for Optimizing Energy in Indonesia. .
