SLEMAN, KRJogja.com - 4 lecturers of UPN "Veteran" Yogyakarta conducted a study of petroleum content in the old oil wells of Wonocolo Kedewan, Bojonegoro, East Java, which is now still a livelihood field of local people. From the results of research, there is other than crude oil that is also water produced that lifted up with the oil.

The 4 lecturers were Ekha Yogafanny, Mth. Kristiati EA, Ayu Utami, and Wibiana Wulan Nandari assisted by 5 students of UPNVY Environmental Engineering. The study was conducted with a grant scheme funded by LPPM UPNVY.

The determination of the old oil well of Wonocolo as Petroleum Geoheritage is a good start for the local people to not only rely their economy on the existing of the oil resources, but also on the typical geothermal tourism potential of the oil field.

In every the petroleum production of the old Wonocolo oil well, 90% of the liquid that is lifted to the surface is the water produced. The water contains dissolved and suspended solid particles, oil, phenol, COD, BOD, heavy metals, etc. Currently, the produced water has not been treated properly and discharged directly into the environment. From the results of research conducted since May 2018 until now, it is known that the water produced contains high dissolved and suspended solids, and can have a negative impact on the environment when it is disposed of directly into the river.

In order to support the sustainable management of Petroleum Geoheritage Wonocolo, the results show that the bioreactor membrane technology is able to reduce the dissolved solids content in the production water up to 95%. However, this method has the disadvantage of high initial investment costs and pretreatment techniques that require large land and costs. Therefore, further research on media filtration is currently underway. It is hoped that this processing technique will be effective and efficient to reduce the dissolved solids in produced water to be applicable in the old Wonocolo oil wells. (MG 19)
