JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) updated the strength of the earthquake that rocked the Aru Islands, Maluku, on Saturday (01/26/2019) afternoon.

Responding to that, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) Veteran Yogyakarta Disaster Mitigation Expert, Eko Teguh Paripurno explained, the update of information could have happened because of the decision making based on the collected data.

"Updating information, both in the form of revisions to the position of the epicenter and the revision of the intensity of the earthquake can occur, because it involves the decision making based on collected data," said Eko to Okezone, Sunday (01/27/2019).

BMKG initially released an earthquake that rocked the Aru Islands at 6.6 on the Richter scale (SR), then updated to 5.9 SR.

Eco stressed even though the first genpa warning was more precisely, it would not make people nervous. Yet, it made a caution that must be better prepared.

"What must be understood first is that we are prone to earthquakes / tsunamis or not. "In areas that are prone to earthquakes / tsunamis, since it is at the coastal border, for example, we must be prepared if there is potensially an earthquake," he said.

Therefore, Eko emphasized that if there is a threat of disaster, it must firstly understand the potential hazards and risks. Secondly, it must have a monitoring awareness and thirdly, it must have  awareness and  ability to disseminate information.

"Fourth, have the will and ability to respond. Monitoring awareness and ability are important for thaving a  misstep, "he said. (Wal)
