SLEMAN - Have you ever tasted onde-onde? This typical Indonesian snack can be found in traditional markets and modern cake outlets. This onde-onde is made from a mixture of green beans and brown sugar and wrapped in spring roll skin made from sticky rice flour and sesame sprinkles. In the process of sowing sesame, most of the producers of Onde-Onde encountered problems.

"One of the onde-onde making processes is sowing sesame. This process is carried out traditionally and requires many workers. So, the other process is hampered", said Tri Wibawa, the supervisor of the Student Creativity Program (PKM) of UPN"Veteran"Yogyakarta.

The limitations of the onde-onde craftsmen, said Tri, inspired 5 students from the Industrial Engineering Department to make sesame sowing tools named "Gonjang-ganjing" machines.

The machine is the result of an innovation by M. Irvan Dwi Putra (2016), Nur Ezha Vidawati (2016), Rizki Melati (2016), Febbyola Raflyani (2017), and Lia Ilfiana (2018) which has a working principle resembling the concept of sesame sowing manually so that it does not affect the end result of onde-onde.

Using this machine, the sesame sowing is done without waiting the tray fully loaded so that the workers do not need to stop their activities in making onde-onde.

"The driving force for this engine is Brushless DC Motor. The energy consumption releases during the sesame sowing process manually is 1.3669 kcal / minute. Meanwhile, it is only 0.2087 kcal / minute when this machine is operating. Thus, the level of energy consumption is reduced by 84.73%", said Irvan explaining the effectiveness of the machine.

This machine can shorten the production time with a comparison of the time in making 60 pieces of onde-onde manually in the process of 600 seconds to 493 seconds using the Gonjang-Ganjing machine. So, the decrease in processing time is 17.83%.

Irvan also said that this machine could increase the production capacity of the home industry, in which it was able to produce 438 onde – onde in 1 hour, whereas it had only been able to produce 360 ??pieces of onde – onde at first time. Thus, the increase is 21.67%.

This machine has been tested at Aris Widodo’sonde – ondehome industry in Gaduhan Village, Bantul. According to Aris, this machine result is very effective at reducing the manufacturing time and does not confiscate workers’ time.
