"The Teacher's Day tradition is usually filled with the inspirational and rhetorical words. I am sorry, but my speech will be a little different today. I want to speak as it is, with a sincere heart, to all teachers in Indonesia from Sabang to Merauke", said Nadiem Anwar Makarim in his written speech.
In his remarks, Nadiem promised not to give empty promises to hundreds of teachers. He also expressed his sympathy to teachers all over Indonesia because of the noble task they had followed by rules which made their assignments be difficult.
In addition, Nadiem said that the administrative tasks assigned to teachers prevented them from helping students who were left behind in class. Nadiem assessed that the curriculum is too dense and lack of trust to innovate can prevent teachers from working for the success of their students.
He said that he would not give empty promises to all teachers in Indonesia, and would continue to fight for freedom of study in Indonesia. He also asked the teachers to make small changes in class without waiting for orders.
Still in his speech, Nadiem said that small changes could continue to be made in the following ways:
1. Invite classes to discuss, not just listen.
2. Provide opportunities for students to teach in class.
3. Trigger social service projects that involve the whole class.
4. Find a talent in students who are lack of confidence.
5. Offer assistance to teachers who are experiencing difficulties
"Whatever the small changes it is, if every teacher does it simultaneously, this big ship named Indonesia will definitely move", concluded Nadiem before giving a congragulation to the Teacher's Day in his speech.
