Jakarta - The giant hole that suddenly appeared in Lebbo Tengae Village, Maros, South Sulawesi on Monday (12/23/2019) was being heavily discussed. The hole, which was originally 2 meters in diameter, now continues to widen. From the monitoring of AFP on Tuesday (12/24/2019) its diameter has reached 20 meters.
The hole as deep as about 50 meters continues to expand because the ground is eroded in the edge little by little into the hole. At first, this hole only resembled an ordinary well that had a cavity in it. However, because the hole has got bigger, the police urged the community not to approach the location to a radius of 150 meters.
According to the residents, the appearance of the hole in the paddy field area was accompanied by a roar and smoke rising from the location. Meanwhile, the geology team from Hasanuddin University (Unhas) has not been able to ascertain the cause of the natural phenomenon.
Yet, based on the initial observations, they suspected that there was a large cavity in the hole that resembled a cave. They also appealed to the residents not to associate the phenomenon as was the case in Palu called liquefaction.
Before this incident, detikcom notes that there were also similar phenomena in various places in Indonesia and the world. One of them happened in Sukabumi in 2018 ago. The mysterious hole in Sukabumi also appeared in the rice field area with a diameter and depth of 6 meters. This allegedly happened because there was a cave in the hole that caused the surface of the land to sink into the deep.
In addition, this phenomenon also occurred in the Gunungkidul area in February 2018. At that time, the Geology Engineering Lecturer of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) "Veteran" Yogyakarta, Arif Rianto Budi Nugroho, said that the phenomenon was common in the Karst region.
Now, this phenomenon is referred to as sinkhole or fall hole in abroad.
