In the current new academic year 2020/2021, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional ‘Veteran’ Yogyakarta (UPNVY) has received 3,282 new students for various faculties. This number has been screened and selected from several admission stages of PTN, especially UPNVY, previously there were 45,627 new students who registered to study at UPNVY.
The application of Introduction to Campus Life at UPNVY carries the name 'Introduction to State Defence Campus Life' (PKKBN). The PKKBN implementation is expected to be a vehicle for disseminating the Independence Learning - Independence Campus policy designed by the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud).
The UPNVY Chancellor, Mohammad Irhas Effendi, said that the PKKBN was an official admission activity for new students by UPNVY. He also explained that PKKBN is currently being carried out in a branded manner in which there are new students (maba) who follow online and some join offline (outside the network) to anticipate the spread of COVID-19.
"So, we officially accept students in the open Senate session of the University today. We have this PKKBN branded, so there are some new students in the room and some at the house. Those who take part offline or in that place are new students from Yogyakarta as the representatives from various fields of study. This is in the context of implementing health protocols," said Irhas at the UPNVY Rectorate Building, Monday (21/09/2020).
This PKKBN also invited the Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud), Nadiem Makarim to give a few words. He said that the learning method should return to the independence of the students. The independence possessed by the students in the dynamic process of education can realize the benefits of the purpose of life in their environment.
"Continuing the learning from Ki Hajar Dewantara, the educational paradigm should get back to the students’ independence. To get the value and purpose of life as a human being who gives good to the family, society and the nation," said Nadiem.
Nadiem also mentioned that this philosophy underlies the Ministry of Education and Culture's policy of "Independent Learning". Of course, in this policy, it has a goal of liberating educational units, especially universities, in building the character of the nation's next generation.
"This philosophy underlies the transformation of the Ministry of Education and Culture's policy of "Independent Learning", especially an independent campus that liberates the education unit to improve the culture of innovation learning, also triggers a grow mindset for the nation's future generations," he said.
He also added that currently the Semester Credit System (SKS) is defined as hours of activity which embody the students’ flexibility in studying.
"Currently, SKS is defined as activity hours so that there is flexibility for the students in studying, both in lectures and other activities such as internships, teaching in villages, and so on," said Nadiem.
Nadiem hopes that having the presence of flexible SKS, the universities can provide independence for their students. He also explained that the education is the key solution to various challenges and problems faced by the nation.
"Various activities outside the campus are expected to increase the students’ competence to provide solutions to real problems the society has. Education is the key to the solution to the learning crisis and various problems the nation has. The students are expected to be agents of changes and motivators to produce various solutions for the nation," concluded Nadiem.
One of State Universities in Indonesian that is ready to carry out an independent campus system is UPNVY. Irhas said that although this semester the lecture system is directed online, UPNVY has prepared technical instructions for the continuity of the implementation of Tridharma of higher education.
"Currently, the students will undergo major lectures online. The university has compiled technical instructions in carrying out the duties and functions of Tridharma of higher education for the fields of education, research, and community service," said Irhas.
However, Irhas added that there are several lectures that must be conducted face-to-face in the dynamics of learning. Yet, his party will strictly follow the procedures in health protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Several lecture activities such as practicum, and several other activities are carried out face-to-face while still paying attention to the health and safety of the entire academic community, and UPNVY employees," he said.
