The Masters of Geological Engineering program is one of the courses in the University of Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Yogyakarta postgraduate program that operates based on the Director General of Higher Education Decree Number: 2820/D/T/2001 dated 30 August 2001.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

The objective of this program is to provide theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the field of geology particularly in geological science branches and applications, thus resulting in a Masters of Engineering (MT) in the field of geology with the following qualifications:

The ability to develop and provide professional performance based on geosciences.

Competitiveness in the free market era.

The potential to continue formal education at a higher level (doctorate program).

CURRICULUM

In order to obtain a Masters of Engineering (MT) degree in geology, students must take a minimum of 38 semester credit units of compulsory subjects and elective subjects within 4 trimesters (16 months). Generally, Trimester I & II are full of compulsory subjects. Trimester III consists of elective subjects (minimum of 3 subjects) to support the thesis concentration in accordance to the thesis topic, submitting the thesis proposal and excursions. Some of the elective subjects can be taken in Trimester II on the condition that the Cumulative Achievement Index (IPK) in Trimester I is > 3.5 and lecturers in the subjects taken are available. Trimester IV is for the thesis, academic guidance, thesis seminars and undergraduate thesis defense.

LECTURES

The Masters of Geological Engineering program material consists of: classical lectures, public lectures, laboratory work, group discussions, independent assignments, field studies and seminars.

This intensive education system uses semester credit units and can be completed within 4 months. There are 16 face to face lectures in each trimester of 50 minutes/week duration for each semester credit unit. There must be a consultation for the thesis proposal in the second trimester so that the thesis research can be effectively undertaken in the third and forth semesters.

Intensive lectures are held over 5 days/week in a comfortable and air conditioned room located at the Condongcatur campus in the Masters of Geological Engineering postgraduate program or at the UPNVY Department of Geological Engineering.

TEACHING STAFF

The teaching staff in the Masters of Geological Engineering program consist of academics, experts and practitioners who are experienced and competent in their respective fields.

Teaching staff consists of a number of professors and lecturers and most of them have a doctorate.

STUDENTS

Masters of Geological Engineering students must have at least a bachelor’s degree or a degree from abroad that is accredited by the National Education Department from a number of disciplines (Earth Sciences, Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Agriculture (Soil) as well as other disciplines that may be considered).

Prospective students from disciplines outside of Earth Sciences must attend a matriculation program beforehand.

FUNDING AND WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITIES

Postgraduate students who excel and who are willing can be selected to become “Teaching Assistants”, “Research Assistants” or “Laboratory Assistants” (Tutors) and receive a fee in accordance to UPNVY conditions.

There are opportunities to participate in lecturer’s research work (“small research groups”) and in university research (“broad research groups”). 

There are opportunities to obtain research funds from the Department of Education (Post grants), the Department of Research and Technology and other agencies in accordance with the respective proposal submissions.

There are measures for students that propose thesis titles/topics that are related to oil or mining to be submitted to oil and mining companies in order to obtain information or research funding.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURES

Registration costs are paid through an account at Bank BPD DIY in the name of the UPNVY Rector, Acc No. 20.05.4.00097-9 (it can be paid at Bank BPD branches throughout Indonesia).

The registration form is to be filled out complete with proof of registration payment, a photocopy of certificates/diplomas and a transcript of the bachelor degree, 3 copies of 4 x 6 passport photographs, assignment letter/study permit from agencies from those students who are working and submitted or sent to the :
