“Becoming the leading International Relations Department in the fields of diplomacy-negotiation and defense-security to offer knowledge to the people and the nation” is the vision to be achieved by the department. The Department of International Relations focuses on the studies on diplomacy-negotiation, defense-security and conflict management. The department trains students in a multi-cultural atmosphere. Students and lecturers come from various ethnicities and islands in Indonesia and Timor Leste. The Department of International Relations is a “miniature Indonesia” where students with different religious, ethnic and cultural background share equal opportunity in the learning process. The learning process in the department is supported by 22 full time and part time lecturers who mostly hold Master’s or Doctor’s degree. To strengthen the practical skills of students, the faculty invites practitioners from the Indonesian Foreign  Ministry,  foreign  embassies  in  Jakarta  and  UKM  Malaysia  to  share  their  knowledge  and  experiences.  These practitioners train students in mastering practical skills in the field of diplomacy.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the International Relations Department, UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta are  expected  to  master   analytical and  practical  ability  in  the  field  of  diplomacy negotiation,  defense  security  and  conflict studies. The reason is the fact that globalization increase competition among nations, societies and  individuals.  In  a  competitive  world,  the skills  to  apply  diplomacy  and  negotiation  is the  key  to  success.  The  state  needs  skillful diplomats and negotiators to win international negotiations. Local governments, multinational companies  and  other  institutions  also  need experts  in  diplomacy  and  negotiation  as  well as  in  international  relations.  Considering  the opportunity  and  challenge,  the  International Relations  department  becomes  the  center  of excellence  which  combines  the  high  quality teaching of negotiation and management, and conflict security in a multicultural atmosphere. This  will  help  graduates  to  pursue  careers  in various institutions and companies such as: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Local Governments, StateOwned  Enterprises,  Colleges/Universities, Mass  Media,  Banking  Sector,  Multinational Corporations, Non-Government Organizations, etc.

Diplomacy and Negotiation Studies

This major offers the teaching method which includes frameworks for analysis and skills for diplomacy and negotiation.  Practitioners  and  diplomats  from  the  Ministry  of  Foreign  Affairs  of  Republic  Indonesia  and other agencies are invited to share knowledge and experiences to students. Practical learning in the field of diplomacy and negotiation is also supported by the availability of Laboratory of Diplomacy where students can get involved in various discussions on contemporary issues. Other than that, the Diplomatic Course and the International Conference simulation serve as a mechanism which is continuously and routinely developed to provide students with knowledge and skills in diplomacy and negotiation.

Security and Defense Study

This  major  provides  students  with  frameworks  for  analysis  on  security  and  defense  studies  as  well  as practical  skills  in  conflict  management.  The  learning  process  is  supported  by  well-known  practitioners from various institutions  including  the Ministry of Defense, Republic  Indonesia.  The learning process in this major is also supported by the Laboratory of Defense and Security where students will be involved in various studies on contemporary security and conflict issues. Simulations and conflict resolution trainings are also continuously and routinely conducted as an essential means for students to equip themselves to become promoters of peace in various situations.

Laboratories

Diplomacy Laboratory

This laboratory serves to accommodate students who take Diplomacy and Negotiation major as a support for the learning process for several subjects, namely: Diplomacy Practice, Protocol Skills, Diplomatic Correspondence, International Negotiation Simulation, and International Business Negotiation. The learning process in the Diplomacy Laboratory is set in such a way that students can virtually feel the real atmosphere and situation of diplomacy-negotiation.

Diplomacy  Laboratory  also  serves  to  accommodate  efforts  to  develop  various  studies  in  the  field  of  diplomacynegotiation performed either by lecturers or students in which the end result would be a scientific publication. The laboratory  also  serves  as  the  main  place  for  developing  cooperative  networks  with  both  domestic  and  overseas institutions  through  various  activities  such  as  seminars,  workshops,  lectures  by  experts,  trainings,  simulations  and researches. These activities are jointly carried out by lecturers and the ‘Letter of Diplomacy’ students’ study group.

Defense and Security Laboratory

This laboratory accommodates students who are taking the Defense and Security major to support various lectures such as: Security Study, Defense Policy Study, Defense Management Basics, Strategic Study and Conflict Resolution Management.  The  laboratory  also  serves  for  the  development  of  various  studies  in  the  field  of  Defense-Security conducted  both  by  lecturers  and  students  in  which  the  end  result  would  be  a  scientific  publication.  Defense  and Security Laboratory also provides and develops database, information and literatures, as well as complete research results especially regarding the study of defense and security. The laboratory also develops scientific discussions, peace education, and trainings on skills to identify and manage conflicts for students, teaching staffs, as well as outsiders. The activities are supported by DEFENSIA Students’ Study Group.

International Organization Laboratory

International Organization Laboratory is a place where the department develops studies and database on international organizations such as the UN, ASEAN and the European Union. The activities in this laboratory are mainly to facilitate lecturers and students in developing the study on international organizations. The laboratory also develops networks of  relations  and  facilitates  students’  internship  activities  at  international  organization  offices.  The  activities  in  this laboratory  includes  research,  seminars,  workshops,  public  lectures,  short  courses  and  scientific  publications.  The activities are supported by the “KOIN (International Organization Studies)” Students’ Study Group.
